Exercise Mistake #3: Not Getting Enough Rest

Filed under: Exercise And Fitness — @ 10:30 am on October 3, 2006

Not getting enough rest is the third out of 3 main exercise mistakes that lead to overtraining and burnout. Exercise mistake #1 is here and exercise mistake #1 is here.

You need to get enough rest between your exercise periods. Take your rest periods as seriously as you do your exercise. Contrary to popular belief, muscle tissue doesn’t grow stronger during exercise – instead it breaks down. Your muscle tissue needs a period of rest to repair and build up. So those muscle get bigger during that repair and build up process that happens BETWEEN workouts.

Constant hard workouts with no rest in between mean constant muscle wear without tissue regeneration. There was a study where nine ultra-long-distance runners who participated in a seventeen-mile-a-day, ten-day race had their thighs measured before and after the race. The measurement actually decreased! You’d expect the quadriceps to get bigger after such an event, but they got smaller!

Bodybuilders also find that a little rest pays off. A well-known female competitor once wrote an article describing the difficulty she was having trying to develop her biceps. She worked her muscle daily and nothing happened – her biceps didn’t grow. She increased the weight and still saw no improvement. In frustration, she cut back on the weight and took every other day off. Imagine her surprise when her muscle grew larger! That poor muscle finally got a chance to repair :)

If you exercise every day, alternate your cardio days with your weight workout days - so you do cardio every other day and weights every other day.
