Exercise Mistake #1: Exercising Way Too Much

Filed under: Exercise And Fitness — @ 10:17 am on October 1, 2006

The main exercise mistake that leads to overtraining and burnout is exercising too much. Yes, there CAN be too much of a good thing!

Top athletes and their trainers minimize the possibility of over-training by manipulating the amount, intensity, and type of exercise. They usually start out the season with a lot of low-intensity work. As the season goes on, they exercise less often but more intensely. They also put a large emphasis on the proper exercise technique. Between seasons the players stay in shape with “active rest,” participating in the low-key sports that are different from the sport they’re training for.

You can apply these same strategies to your exercise routine. If you run, jog or walk, go long distances at a slow pace on some days and short distances faster on other days. If you don’t want to take a day off from exercise, do an “active rest” recreational activity such as hiking, bicycling, or swimming. Bodybuilders can achieve the same results by alternating long, gentle workouts with short, intense ones.
