Waist-To-Hip Ratio Is Better Than BMI In Predicting Heart Attack Risk

Filed under: Weight Loss Facts, Weight Loss News — @ 7:00 am on November 10, 2005

As reported by Times Online, waist-to-hip ratio is more accurate in accessing heart attack risk than Body Mass Index (BMI).

BMI is the standard test for obesity. You can calculate your BMI using the BMI calculator.

Waist-to-hip ratio is measured with a tape - you simply measure the circumference of your waist and your hips. Just put the tape around your waist, note the number in inches. Do the same for your hips. Then divide the waist circumference by the hip circumference. The resulting number is the waist-to-hip ratio.

According to the study, if your waist-to-hip ratio is greater than 0.9 for men, or 0.85 for women, you are at the increased risk for heart disease.

BMI Calculator: Are You Overweight?

Filed under: Weight Loss Facts — @ 10:55 am on November 9, 2005

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a standard test to determine whether someone is overweight. BMI calculates body fat according to the relationship of weight and height.

Enter your height in feet:

and inches:

Enter your weight in pounds:

Your result:

BMI less then 19 = Underweight
BMI between 19 and 25 = Healthy Range
BMI over 25 = Overweight
BMI over 27 = Significantly Overweight
BMI over 30 = Obese

Note: Since BMI calculations use total body weight and not estimates of lean muscle mass and fat, it can not determine between the overweight and the more muscular.

The bodybuilders are all considered obese by BMI standards :) They have so much muscle, and muscle weighs more than fat, so they are very heavy in terms of weight, but they are by all means not fat!

So if you have an above average muscle mass, the BMI measurement might not be correct for you. But for most people, it’s fairly accurate.

Weight Loss Success Story From Pinky

Filed under: Weight Loss Success Stories — @ 9:53 am on November 8, 2005

Here’s the weight loss success story that I received from one of my newsletter readers:

“Hi Melanie,

First of all I would like to say congratulations and secondly thanks for remembering me till date.

Similarly I would like to give you another thank you for helping and motivating me in getting what I wanted…. yes !!! healthy weight and good health. Today I am very happy for what I have got. Everyone asks me how I lost those unwanted pounds, I just say to them to eat well balanced food.

It’s great that when I am able to put on all those nice dresses, I look great. It took about 2 years to get what I had desired. I have realized all it takes to lose weight is the planning and the desire to achieve it.

One thing that best worked for me is to eat small portions and frequently, secondly to just keep moving… Do this and that…just move your body with nice music…… and love yourself and listen to yourself.

Melanie, thanks for everything and cheers for the bright future.”

Exercise Leads To Better Sleep At Night

Filed under: Weight Loss News, Exercise And Fitness — @ 7:05 am on November 7, 2005

Accoring to a study, better fitness leads to better sleep. 175 postmenopausal, overweight or obese, sedentary women were enrolled in a year-long exercise program - half of them in a moderate-intensity exercise, and the other half in low-intensity stretching.

An increase of 10% or greater in the fitness level (the Oxygen Consumption test) was associated with longer sleep duration and less use of sleep medication.

Stretchers were also less likely to use sleep medication and have trouble falling asleep than baseline. Basically, both groups of exercisers had better sleep at the end of the study.

Interestingly, the study also found that evening exercise can lead to troubles falling asleep, while morning exercisers were falling asleep more easily.

So for best sleep, exercise in the morning.

Family Meals Help Prevent Obesity In Teenagers

Filed under: Weight Loss Facts, Weight Loss News — @ 7:08 am on November 5, 2005

As reported by ABC News, a study by University of Queensland found that teenagers who eat meals with their family on a regular basis are less likely to be overweight.

Unfortunately, these days many families don’t eat meals together and everyone is eating on the run. It’s important to find the time to sit down for a family dinner every day - not only because of the weight benefits, but also to re-connect as a family and spend some time together.

According to Nutritional Wellness website, another study conducted by National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse have found that teens who ate 5 or more family dinners at home (versus 3 or less) were 2.42 times less likely to smoke cigarettes, 1.73 times less likely to drink alcohol, 2.92 times less likely to try marijuana, 2.71 times more likely to report low levels of stress and tension at home, 41% more likely to confide in their parents with a serious problem and 38% more likely get mostly A’s and B’s in school.

Fat Linked To Inflammation In The Body

Filed under: Reasons To Lose Weight, Weight Loss News — @ 10:45 am on November 4, 2005

A study by University of Buffalo found that certain blood cells exist in a proinflammatory state in obese persons. According to Paresh Dandona, M.D., Ph.D., head of UB’s Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, “These cells are creating a lot of nuisance in the obese. They enter the artery and set up atherosclerosis. They activate fat cells to produce more proinflammatory factors. They interfere with insulin signaling, causing insulin resistance. They even enter the brain.”

We all know that being obese puts you at a much increased risk for many diseases, and chronic inflammation in the body caused by the fat is one of the reasons why.

Weight Loss Success Story From Michael

Filed under: Weight Loss Success Stories — @ 9:49 am on November 3, 2005

Here’s a weight loss success story that I recently received:

“In August, I was shopping with my wife for new clothes and I realized that I could no longer fit into the 38 pants that I normally wear. I knew that I had to do something.

I have been using the Foolproof diet plan for 30 days and the results have been amazing! Now, not only do I fit into my 38 pants, but I am wearing 36’s - which have been in my closet for 2 years!

This plan has done more than help me to lose weight. It has taught me about eating, portions, preparation and discipline. It is not easy to be hungry between meals and still not eat. Old habits are hard to break, and this diet has helped me to stop some of the bad things that I had done in the past.

I learned about cooking food and preparing it without all the added fat and calories, while using other ingredients to add taste. I learned how to portion my meals so that I was not just scooping out a plate-ful, but weighing and measuring like I’ve never done before. I have found that when I eat the portions prescribed by this diet, I am full at the end of the meal, and do not have a need for seconds.

The most amazing thing to me about this diet is that it is not complicated at all. Instead, simple recipes, and plain common sense have allowed me to lose over 20 pounds in a month with more to come!

Thank you!!”

Does Marriage Make You Fat?

Filed under: Weight Loss Facts, Weight Loss News — @ 10:00 am on November 2, 2005

According to a study by Polish Academy of Sciences and Michigan State University, in every age and educational group married men and women were more likely to be overweight and obese than not married.

Nobody know the exact reason why it happens, but my theory is that when most people get married, they kind of let themselves go. They get too comfortable and are not as concerned about their physical appearance.

People who are not married and are on the lookout for a mate try harder to look their best to attract potential dates. Once the goal has been achieved, they relax and worry less about their looks, and stop watching what they eat.

So for us married folks, it’s important to remember to keep ourselves in good shape, so we don’t turn into a person twice the size of what we were on our wedding day :)

Lose 20 lbs a year by eating just 10% less

An average person (who weighs 150 lbs and eats about 2,000 calories per day) will lose around 20 lbs per year by reducing his or her food intake by only 10 percent.

10% of 2,000 calories = 200 calorie savings per day. 1 lb of fat = 3,500 calories. 200 calories x 365 days divided by 3,500 = 20.85 lbs per year!

No dieting! Just eat whatever you are eating, and leave one tenth of the food on your plate. You won’t even notice the difference - try it right now - divide your plate into 10 equal parts, and leave one out - it’s a really small amount of food to give up.

If you are bigger and eat more than 2,000 calories per day, you will lose even more weight. Let’s say if you currently eat 3,000 calories per day, you will lose about 30 lbs per year by eating just 10% less!

Think about this powerful 10% rule…
