Our Bodies Are Programmed To Overeat In The Fall

Filed under: Weight Loss Facts — @ 7:13 am on October 22, 2005

As reported by CalorieLab, according to the research by University of El Paso, people are genetically programmed to eat more in the Fall than other seasons. Based on the analysis of food diaries of 315 people, people ate on average 200 calories more per day in the Fall (and yes, the research has factored in the Fall Holidays - people ate more during the Fall even without the Holiday overeating).

This makes perfect sense. Our primitive instincts had developed in the days where we had to hunt for animals and gather the plants to get the food. During the winter, there were no edible plants in those regions with cold winters, and it was hard to find something to eat. So in those days we had to gain enough weight in the Fall to get through the tough winter!

Even though the times have changed, our primitive instincts stay the same.

Brazilian Diet Pills Controversy

Filed under: Weight Loss News — @ 4:40 pm on October 21, 2005

There is a new craze right now about these “Brazilian Diet Pills“. They got tons of free publicity lately due to 4 Florida women failing an employment drug test after taking those pills to lose weight. Turned out some of the pills contain illegal drugs amphetamines, plus stuff like tranquilizers and generic version of prescription anti-depressants.

You’d think after knowing that, nobody would want to take those pills, right? Yeah, right :) People are going crazy trying to hunt down and order those brazillian diet pills on the net for as much as $200. I guess someone who said “There is no such thing as bad publicity” was right :)

A popular Diet Blog has showed up as #1 in Google’s search results for “Brazilian Diet Pills” and have gotten 248 comments in one day from people looking to buy the pills. Ironically, the Diet Blog’s page that ranked #1 for brazillian diet pills is the one that tells people about dangers of these pills and tells “Buyer Beware”! And after reading that page, people still were posting comments how they are desperately looking to buy the pills!

All I can say is “Wow”…

Should People Sue The Restaurants For Making Them Fat?

Filed under: Weight Loss News, Restaurants And Fast Food — @ 8:31 am on October 21, 2005

I don’t think so! And neither does the US senate.

As reported by Connecticut Post, The U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill that would prevent people from suing restaurants for obesity-related problems by a vote of 306 to 120.

Way to go! Nobody is forcing people to eat those fatty foods. They choose to stuff themselves with cheeseburgers, fries and cakes, and then blame the restaurants for making them fat. How pathetic!

You will succeed in losing weight only if you accept the responsibility that it is you who puts the food in your mouth.

Breastfeeding And Weight Loss

Filed under: Weight Loss Facts — @ 8:15 am on October 20, 2005

A vast majority of women gain weight while pregnant. Most are stuck with at least 10 unwanted lbs even after the baby is born. The easiest way to shed those extra pounds is by breastfeeding your baby.

Breastfeeding burns an extra 500 calories per day. This is equivalent to an hour of moderate exercise, or a big cheeseburger!

Assuming you don’t eat more than you did before the pregnancy, those extra pounds will just gradually melt off while you are breastfeeding your baby.

I gained 35 lbs during my pregnancy, and was left with 20 pounds of excess fat after my daughter was born. I breastfed my daughter for a year, and lost all that fat without even trying - just due to the calories burned by breastfeeding.

Weight Loss Surgery Risks: 1 out of 22 people dies

Filed under: Weight Loss Facts — @ 9:13 am on October 19, 2005

As reported by Chicago SunTimes, a study by Dr. David Flum from Washington University found that 4.6% of patients who’s had a weight loss surgery died within 12 months of surgery.

Here are the numbers:

*Operations in 1998: 13,365
*Projected in 2005: 130,000
*Projected in 2010: 218,000
*Female: 84 percent
*Average age: 41.7
*Younger than 18: 0.3 percent
*Older than 64: 1 percent
*Household income below $25,000: 2 percent
*Family income higher than $45,000: 59.7 percent
*Average hospital stay: 3.3 days
*Mortality rate 30 days after surgery: 2 percent
*After three months: 2.8 percent
*After one year: 4.6 percent

SOURCE: JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION

In addition, this study doesn’t account for those people who die after 1 year due from surgery-related causes. My mom’s coworker’s mother died from the complications of weight loss surgery 2 years after the surgery. This lady was in her 50s, a woman leading a very active life. She lost over 100 lbs after the surgery and was really happy with it. But 2 years later the complications from the surgery showed up and she passed away due to them.

Some people view the weight loss surgery as a quick fix. Unfortunately, some money-hungry doctors won’t properly educate the prospective patients about the risks of this surgery. Going under the knife should be a very, very, very last resort.

You have to do the whole hour of aerobics to burn off the 500 calories contained in a big piece of cheesecake.

Question to ask yourself:

  • What is easier for you: exercising for 1 hour or not eating the cheesecake?

Drink More Water To Lose Weight

Yes, at least 8 glasses per day. Why?

I was looking for a scientific explanation, and what I found is:

  • because when the body is dehydrated, it doesn’t work as efficiently and tends to hang on to fat

To Lose Weight, Keep Yourself Busy

Filed under: Weight Loss Tips — @ 11:48 am on October 14, 2005

People tend to eat more when there is nothing to do. Boredom leads to endless snacking. Munching on fatty goodies is not a good way to entertain yourself!

Stay busy. When you are busy, it will keep your mind off food.
